Kathy Carney has extensive training in drawing and painting. This has given her a firm technical foundation to support her work. Transparent layers of oil paint are built up to create the luminosity that is unique to oil paint. Kathy’s paintings can be described as surreal realism. The work is realistic in that it is a study of the effect of light and structure occurring in the scene. The paintings follow the logic of realistic art, but there is always a dreamlike quality to the places and events. There is a balance between an external realism and a felt intuition. Her paintings are a poem about a place rather than a realistic rendition.
